Ongeveer 400 Koerdische mensen protesteerden vanmiddag op het Luxemburgplein in Brussel, voor de gebouwen van het Europese parlement, tegen de bomaanslag op de verkiezingsmeeting in Amed (Dyarbakir) van de linkse Koerdische partij HDP gisteren, waarbij minstens 3 doden vielen en 402 gewonden, waarvan 16 ernstig. De aanslag was een triest hoogtepunt in het geweld waarmee de verkiezingscampagne van de HDP afgelopen weken werd geconfronteerd (zie meer hierover in de verklaring van de HDP in het Engels die je hieronder kan lezen). Tot de actie was opgeroepen door sympathisanten van de HDP en de Koerdische nationale beweging in België. Ook in heel wat andere landen, waaronder natuurlijk Turkije en Koerdistan zelf, werd vandaag geprotesteerd.
De verkiezingen van nu zondag in Turkije kunnen een belangrijk kantelpunt betekenen: haalt de HDP, die voor de eerste keer niet met onafhankelijke kandidaten, maar als partij, deelneemt, de kiesdrempel van 10%, dan kan Erdogan de voldoende grote meerderheid in het parlement die hij beoogt om een grondwetswijziging waarmee hij onder meer een sterk presidentieel regime wil opbouwen, door te drukken, vergeten.
Een slechter resultaat voor de HDP en een overwinning van de AKP zonder progressief tegengewicht riskeert dan weer niet alleen een zeer harde slag te betekenen voor strijd voor de Koerdische nationale rechten, maar ook voor de vrouwenbeweging, de langzaam terug ontluikende onafhankelijke arbeidersbeweging, de holebi-beweging, en de democratische rechten in het algemeen in Turkije.
Op de actie in Brussel vandaag was “Belgisch” (radicaal) links weer maar eens totaal afwezig, al was ook van niet Koerdische Turken de opkomst erg laag, veel lager dan de brede steun voor de HDP-campagne bij een flink deel van de niet-Koerdische linkerzijde in Turkije mogelijk maakt.
Enthousiaste, soms zelfs totaal onkritische stukken over het nieuwe “libertair geïnspireerde “ gedachtengoed van Ocalan en de PKK, goedbedoelde solidariteitsreizen in Turks, Iraans en Syrisch Koerdistan, enz., kunnen helaas geen concrete, reële solidariteitsbeweging in eigen land vervangen. En zoals steeds zouden ook hierin de grootste organisaties de grootste verantwoordelijkheid moeten dragen…
Attempted massacre against HDP’s Rally in Amed (Diyarbakır) in Turkey: hundreds of civilians injured, at least 4 dead
Political tension is being intentionally increased by the ruling Justice and Development party (AKP – Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) and president Erdoğan, who is supposed to be impartial, on the eve of legislative elections, as opinion polls show a dramatic decrease for the votes of the AKP. After standing as independent candidates for previous two legislative elections in order to circumvent the highest electoral threshold in the world, the HDP decided to challenge the AKP and run as the party for the elections on June 7th. If the HDP manages to overpass 10% threshold, the AKP will not have 330 seats in the parliament which is necessary for bringing a constitutional change to referendum. Depending on the results of other two parties, it is also highly possible that the AKP will not win enough seats to form the majority government for which the requirement is 276 seats.
As the results of these elections will radically change the future of Turkey towards either the continuation of Erdoğan’s dictatorship or a democratic transformation with a decreased AKP power, existent fragile situation is provoked by the AKP and president Erdoğan against the HDP. Since the beginning of the electoral campaign, more than 250 different places including our party offices, party headquarters, cars, members and volunteers have been attacked.
The violence against the HDP members and offices intensifies as the Election Day becomes nearer. After the bomb attacks in our Mersin and Adana offices on May 18th, many major attacks took place so far. On 3rd of June during an armed attack in Bingöl on a minivan used for the electoral campaign, the driver Hamdullah Öğe was brutally killed. On 4th of June just before the electoral public meeting of our party in Erzurum, a crowd attacked a minivan on which there was HDP flags and set the minivan in fire while the driver was inside. The driver was seriously injured. None of those who are responsible for these serious attacks were brought before justice. The attackers enjoy full impunity provided by the AKP.
The HDP had organised a mass rally in the city of Diyarbakir attended by hundreds of thousands of people days before the 7th June General Election. Those agitated by the HDP’s success have added another violent attack against them. Two professionally assembled explosive devices were detonated within three minutes of each other in the area that the rally was taking place.
Today’s attack was the biggest and deadliest of the 250 attacks that have been carried out against the HDP in various cities across the country. Just as in the previous attacks, the President and the Prime Minister are directly responsible for today’s attack.
All these attacks and many other violations raise serious concerns about the transparency and fairness of the elections. We call once again on International and European institutions to closely monitor the elections. We also call on the justice to shed light on these dark events.
